GENDER MAINSTREAMING IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY IN AFRICA (Virtual)
Date: 15th March, 2024
Time: 11:00am (UTC)

In many parts of the world, and particularly in Africa, women are still marginalized and obstacles continue to impede their progress as professionals. In the aviation industry, the situation is no different. The Regional Personnel By Gender Analysis published by ICAO revealed that, out of a total of 965,341 aviation professionals interviewed globally, only 49,546 were female representing 5.13% as against 915,795 (94.87%) being male. In Africa, out of 14,767 professionals interviewed, only 898 representing 6.08% were female whereas 13,869 representing 93.92% were male. A lot has been done to promote gender equality but data such as presented above indicates that we cannot rest on our oars. Instead, we must grip them firmer and row faster. There is the need to revisit the drawing board to find out what is working and what must change.

This edition of the Technical Webinar Series is a joint IFATCA (AFM) and GHATCA special webinar and is dedicated to gender equality. It is to provide the platform for brainstorming ways by which female participation in aviation can be boosted and how the disparity between male and female aviation professionals can be bridged. Discussions will also be on what policies must be developed and those that must be modified to achieve this. Panelists will also share their personal achievements, revealing how they overcame obstacles and stereotyped mind-sets to attain the level they are now.
